Barrow’s Promise to Beat Grand Opposition Coalition Comes Early

President Adama Barrow promised in June to beat the grand opposition coalition then being planned to challenge him in 2026. With that united front never materialising as intended, Barrow has already beaten it without a single vote being cast.

Barrow mocked the talks involving more than 20 political parties and groups, declaring: “I heard that 21 parties are in talks to remove me. But I will beat them massively.”

Weeks later, that grand coalition as originally conceived has effectively fallen apart, with major players walking away and separate alliances emerging.

UNITE, despite being one of the newer political forces, stayed with the process and Talib Bensouda eventually emerged as the Coalition 2026 candidate, while others headed for the exit when agreement proved impossible.

Barrow still has an election to win in December, but on this particular promise, he can already claim victory. The grand coalition he promised to beat did not even survive long enough to face him.
