Armed Gang Hits Wave Money Transfer in Senegal, Steals $135,000

About 10 armed robbers stormed a Wave money transfer outlet in Mbour, Senegal, stealing 76 million CFA francs (about $135,000) before exchanging gunfire with a senior gendarmerie officer as they fled, according to local media.

The gang targeted the outlet near Mbour’s Kaolack intersection during the night of August 23rd to 24th and reportedly broke into its safe before escaping with the money.

The situation became more dangerous when the senior officer, who was travelling with his driver to join other gendarmes searching for the suspects, encountered the gang. The robbers opened fire on his vehicle, prompting him to return fire before they escaped.

Police and gendarmes launched a search across the area, and a vehicle stolen and used by the attackers was later recovered in Gandigal, outside Mbour. The suspects remained at large as authorities continued their investigation.
