Young Female Builder Encourages More Girls to Join Construction

At just 26, Ndey Haddy Willan, a native of Kombo Kartong who was raised in Tujereng, is building a career in the construction industry and encouraging more young women to consider a profession traditionally dominated by men.

Driven by a passion for building, Willan said her love for creating and turning ideas into reality inspired her to pursue a career in construction. She believes the profession offers a unique opportunity to leave a lasting impact by helping to build homes, workplaces and infrastructure that improve people’s lives.

“Construction allows me to make a visible impact in communities by helping to create homes, workplaces, and infrastructure that improve people’s lives,” she said.

Willan said the journey has not been without challenges. She has faced doubts about her abilities, societal expectations and bullying because she is a woman working in construction.

“Many people still expect men to take the lead in this industry, but I overcame those challenges by staying focused, working hard, continuously learning, and allowing the quality of my work to speak for itself,” she explained.

She said one of the most rewarding parts of her career has been contributing to projects that benefit communities and watching them grow from foundation to completion.

According to Willan, success in construction requires dedication, discipline, teamwork, effective communication, problem-solving skills, attention to detail and a commitment to continuous learning.

She credits the encouragement of her family, friends and members of the public for motivating her to keep striving for excellence.

Encouraging more young women and girls to consider careers in construction, Willan urged them not to let gender stand in the way of their ambitions.

“No dream is too big, and no profession is off-limits. Believe in yourself, work hard, and never allow anyone to define your future. Your skills, determination, and passion matter more than your gender,” she said.
