Viral Image Claiming Bullock Military Camp Extends Into Senegal Found to Be AI-Generated

A viral image claiming to prove that part of The Gambia’s Bullock military camp sits inside Senegal has been found to be AI-generated, according to a recent fact-check by Malagen in partnership with DUBAWA — an independent African fact-checking platform.

The image circulated following the July 16 border incident, when Senegalese soldiers demolished more than 200 metres of fencing around the Gambian military post, saying it encroached on Senegalese territory.

The Gambian government condemned the action as “profoundly provocative” and “totally unacceptable,” while Senegal said it had previously raised concerns about encroachment in the disputed border area.

Malagen compared the viral image with Google Earth imagery and tested it using two AI-detection tools, both of which returned a 97% likelihood that it was artificially generated.

The fact-check concluded that the viral image does not show the actual Bullock military camp and cannot be used as evidence that part of the barracks lies inside Senegal.
