“Our Lawmakers Have Failed This Country,” NDP Leader Kebba Madi Bojang Says

National Democratic Party (NDP) leader Kebba Madi Bojang has accused The Gambia’s National Assembly of failing to protect citizens and hold the government accountable, promising major legal and institutional reforms if elected president.

Speaking at a rally in Brikama-Ba on Monday, Bojang described the legislature as ineffective, arguing that lawmakers have failed to address outdated laws that benefit those in power at the expense of ordinary Gambians.

“Our National Assembly is ineffective. Our lawmakers have failed this country. That’s why we still have bad laws that are only empowering those at the top,” he said.

Bojang argued that the country needs a stronger and more independent legislature capable of addressing governance challenges, protecting citizens’ rights and ensuring greater accountability in public institutions.

He called for the election of lawmakers who would prioritise legislative reforms and exercise effective oversight of the executive.

“We need vibrant lawmakers to help us amend laws,” he said.

The NDP leader blamed weaknesses in the National Assembly for some of the country’s persistent governance problems, accusing lawmakers of neglecting their constitutional responsibilities.

He also warned Gambians against re-electing President Adama Barrow, arguing that another term under his administration would prolong the difficulties facing ordinary citizens.

“Gambians should not make the mistake of re-electing President Barrow. Our National Assembly is not helping at all,” Bojang told supporters.

He maintained that lawmakers must be held accountable for their performance, stressing that the National Assembly has a responsibility not only to make laws but also to scrutinise government decisions and protect the public interest.

Bojang’s remarks come ahead of the December 5th presidential election, as he seeks to position legislative reform, government accountability and institutional change among his party’s priorities.
