Former GDC executive Ebrima Nyang defects to opposition UDP

By Dawda Baldeh

In a major political shift ahead of the December 5 election, Ebrima Nyang, the former Administrative Secretary 1 of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), has officially defected to the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP).

Nyang announced his exit from the GDC in a public statement, delivering a sharp critique of President Adama Barrow’s administration while positioning the UDP as the country’s best path toward democratic renewal and economic recovery.

Calling the current administration out for failing to address the nation’s soaring cost of living, Nyang stated that his conscience compelled him to make a change.

“After years under President Adama Barrow’s administration, many citizens continue to grapple with the rising cost of living, increasing prices of essential commodities, economic uncertainty, and diminishing confidence in the country’s future,” Nyang said.

“The government must be held accountable for its economic decisions, its handling of national affairs, and its responsibility to protect the welfare of every Gambian.”

Highlighting the UDP’s platform of constitutional reform and presidential term limits, Nyang described his move as a deliberate alignment with a national movement rather than a simple change of party allegiance.

“My decision to join the UDP is not merely a change of political affiliation. It is a conscious decision to align myself with a political movement that I believe can advance the reforms, accountability, and national development our country urgently needs,” he said.

Nyang urged citizens across all political backgrounds to reject divisive rhetoric and unite ahead of the polls, declaring that “The Gambia deserves better, and I am ready to play my part in making that better future possible.”
