Musa M. Balla Jammeh, known across Gambian football as The Falcon, has declared his candidacy for the presidency of the Gambia Football Federation (GFF), presenting himself as a leader shaped by grassroots experience and national service.
From dusty pitches to national recognition
Jammeh’s football journey began at Makumbaya Primary School and continued through Basse High Level, Lamin, and Serrekunda East. He played for local sides including Manju, Boca Juniors (Lamin Lodge), Bundung United, and Abuko United, before standing out at Nasir Ahmadiyya Muslim High School and Nusrat High School. His dominance in Nawettan competitions made him a household name in grassroots football.
Leadership on and off the pitch
Jammeh captained teams at nearly every level, including Wallidan FC and Gambia Armed Forces FC, helping secure league titles. He made his international debut in 1994 in Congo Brazzaville and later joined the national squad in Cologne, Germany. Unlike peers who sought opportunities abroad, Jammeh returned home with the team, a decision seen as patriotic and disciplined.
Building a legacy beyond playing
After retiring, Jammeh strengthened Gambia Armed Forces FC and in 2010 founded Falcons Football Club, guiding it from Nawettan football to the First Division. Under his leadership, Falcons FC has become one of the country’s most competitive sides. He also invested in infrastructure, building a modern football facility in Makumbaya to support future generations.
A vision for Gambian football
“This is not about politics, it’s about football. It’s about building a system that works for players, clubs, and the nation,” Jammeh said, rejecting claims his candidacy is externally driven. He insists his track record and community support underpin his bid.
Supporters see a defining moment
Board members and supporters argue Jammeh’s journey mirrors Gambian football’s evolution and that his leadership could unify the sport. His candidacy, they say, embodies resilience, credibility, and vision.
Whether The Falcon will soar to the highest office in Gambian football remains uncertain, but his story has already left a lasting mark on the game.
