Alport Banjul Staff Demand Managing Director’s Removal After Fresh Protest at Banjul Port

Alport Banjul staff staged another protest at the Port of Banjul today before formally submitting a vote of no confidence demanding the removal of Managing Director Salih Levent Kaçar within five working days.

In documents submitted to management, the Alport Staff Association said the petition was backed by hundreds of workers, including staff at the Banjul Shipyard. The association accused Kaçar’s leadership of repeated delays, poor communication and failure to fully implement agreements reached following government intervention in an earlier dispute.

The workers listed unresolved issues involving staff loans, training and scholarship payments, overtime and shift arrangements, salaries, allowances and other working conditions. They also complained about delays in implementing the approved 2026 staff budget.

Today’s action follows months of tensions at the port. Workers protested in April before launching a sit-down strike in June that brought port operations to a standstill over alleged unresolved welfare concerns.

The association said its latest action is not against Alport, its concession or the government, but is directed at the company’s leadership. It warned that if meaningful action is not taken within five working days, workers could pursue further industrial, administrative or legal action.
