Gambia’s Blade Runner Secures Backing for Kilimanjaro Marathon

By Alieu Jallow

Gambian para‑athlete Ebrima Jallow is set to compete at the 2026 Kilimanjaro Marathon after the government stepped in to fund his trip, turning a call for support into a moment of national pride.

Jallow, the first Gambian invited to the 5km race at the prestigious event, had initially appealed for financial assistance to travel to Tanzania. His participation aims not only at competition but also at promoting disability inclusion and resilience.

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare agreed to sponsor the trip after the story, first reported by The Fatu Network, gained public attention.

In a message shared with The Fatu Network, Jallow’s friend and fellow person with disability, Sanna Kuyateh, expressed gratitude: “Thank you so much for the post about his participation in the Kilimanjaro Marathon. The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare has sponsored the trip, and he will depart with the coach tomorrow via Dakar. Early Thursday morning, they will take their flight.”

As Jallow prepares to leave, Kuyateh said his journey represents more than sport: “The marathon is not just a race, it’s a bold statement of determination, courage, and passion. Standing at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, ready to take on such a powerful challenge, shows the strength of your spirit and the depth of your commitment.”

He added: “I am truly inspired by your journey. Every step you take in that marathon represents resilience, discipline, and the belief that no dream is too big to chase. You’re not only running for yourself—you’re motivating every person living with disability around you to push beyond their limits. Go out there and make unforgettable memories. Run with pride, run with heart, and know that we are all cheering you on every step of the way.”

Jallow’s participation is being hailed as both a personal milestone and a powerful statement on inclusion, visibility, and the potential of persons with disabilities in The Gambia.
