Ahead of The Gambia’s December 5 presidential election, United Gambian Front (UGF) presidential aspirant and National Assembly Member for Foni Bintang Karanai, Bakary K. Badjie, has launched a nationwide “Listen to the People” initiative, pledging to consult citizens before making key policy decisions if elected.
Speaking at a press conference held at the movement’s headquarters at the Mariama Kunda junction, Badjie contrasted his campaign strategy with traditional political promises, arguing that previous administrations have failed to deliver on major commitments.
“In the coming months, you will hear many promises. You will hear about new schools, better healthcare, more jobs and many other commitments. These are important, but many of these promises have remained unfulfilled. Many politicians begin with promises they cannot keep. I begin with a commitment, and that commitment is to listen to the Gambian people on policy matters. But before policy comes principles, and my principle is listening to the Gambian people,” Badjie said.
The presidential hopeful stated that while The Gambia possesses vast potential for growth, widespread corruption and poor leadership continue to undermine development. He emphasized that his candidacy is centered on accountability, honesty, and citizen-led governance.
“For many years, I have travelled across The Gambia. I have listened to farmers, teachers, market women, fishermen and young people. They are not asking for miracles. They are asking for a government that first listens to their needs and then works to improve their lives. I will be a leader who listens first before making decisions. That is real and strong leadership,” he said.
Addressing the country’s youth—who constitute over 65 percent of the national population—Badjie highlighted the urgent need to address unemployment, irregular migration, and limited economic opportunities.
“I want a better future for every Gambian, a door that opens for everyone. Today, too many young people believe their future is somewhere else. I want every child to believe that success is possible here in The Gambia. Whether you live in Banjul or in the smallest village, you matter to us. Our future will not be built by one man. It will be built by all Gambians. I call upon every Gambian, young and old, to join me in building the future of our nation, and that journey begins now,” he added.
When questioned by reporters on his anti-corruption agenda, national security, and women’s empowerment, the lawmaker committed to acting decisively on state audit findings without political bias.
“My first step in tackling corruption is to ensure that all audit reports are respected. Every audit report will be treated with urgency, and once the Finance and Public Accounts Committee submits its findings, strict action will be taken. Whoever is found wanting in corruption must face the full force of the law, regardless of their political affiliation,” he stated.
Badjie is scheduled to begin a comprehensive nationwide tour under the “Listen to the People” banner to gather community feedback ahead of the December polls.
