Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez has triggered widespread reaction across the football world after delivering an extraordinary and combative press conference that included explosive allegations, attacks on the media, and a series of remarks that quickly dominated headlines across Spain and beyond.
The 79 year old club president, speaking after a disappointing season in which Real Madrid finished without a major trophy, rejected calls for his resignation and insisted he would remain in charge unless members voted him out.
“Florentino isn’t going anywhere until the members want me to leave. They’ll have to shoot me to get me out,” Pérez declared during the lengthy appearance.
The press conference, described by several Spanish and international outlets as bizarre and chaotic, quickly shifted away from football matters and turned into a broad attack on journalists, critics, and Spanish football authorities.
Pérez repeatedly accused sections of the media of organising what he called a campaign against him and Real Madrid.
“An absurd situation has arisen because of a campaign against the interests of Real Madrid and against me in particular,” he said.
He also responded to rumours surrounding his health after reports suggested he was exhausted and stepping back from club duties.
“They say I don’t exist, that I have terminal cancer,” Pérez said. “I’d like to take this opportunity to say that I continue to lead Madrid every day. My health is perfect.”
One of the most controversial moments came when Pérez revisited the long running Negreira scandal involving FC Barcelona and allegations surrounding payments linked to former refereeing official José María Enríquez Negreira.
Pérez claimed Real Madrid had been robbed of league titles.
“I’ve only won seven European Cups and seven league titles, which could have been 14 if they hadn’t been stolen from me,” he said.
He later added: “This is the most serious case of corruption in the history of football.”
Pérez also claimed Real Madrid would send a detailed dossier to UEFA concerning the case.
“We will submit a comprehensive dossier to UEFA so that they can nip this in the bud and resolve the case for the good of world football,” he stated.
Another striking moment came when Pérez discussed reports of an alleged training ground altercation involving Real Madrid players.
Rather than deny such incidents happen, the veteran president suggested internal fights were common inside football dressing rooms.
“I’ve been here for 26 years, and there hasn’t been a single year when two players haven’t gotten into a fight, or four,” Pérez said.
He continued: “They’ve fought every single year I’ve been here. It’s just like how young people fight, one kicks the other, the other kicks back, and then they’re friends again.”
Pérez appeared more angered by the leak of the incident than the altercation itself.
“For me, the leak is worse,” he said.
The Real Madrid president also challenged critics to run against him in future club elections.
“Stop beating around the bush, take the plunge, step forward, and put up the necessary funds. Why isn’t anyone running against me? It must be because they’re afraid of me,” Pérez said.
The remarks quickly sparked intense debate across social media and Spanish sports programmes, with many supporters expressing shock at both the tone and content of the press conference.
British newspaper The Guardian described the event as a “bizarre rant”, while several football commentators questioned whether the extraordinary appearance reflected growing pressure inside one of the world’s biggest football clubs.
Reuters reported that speculation before the press conference had included rumours of Pérez resigning or major changes inside the club following the trophyless campaign.
Instead, Pérez doubled down.
“I’m sorry to say that I’m not going to resign,” he said.
The press conference is already being viewed as one of the most remarkable public appearances of Pérez’s long and controversial reign at Real Madrid.
According to reports from Spain, the veteran president is expected to seek another term in office despite mounting criticism from sections of the fanbase following the club’s difficult season.
