Ahead of GFF Elections, Musa “Falcons” Jammeh Responds to Criticism Over His Presidential Bid

As the race for the Gambia Football Federation (GFF) presidency intensifies ahead of the August 2026 Elective Congress, Colonel Musa M. Balla Jammeh, widely known as “Falcons,” has found himself at the centre of growing support as well as criticism from rival camps.
Following his endorsement by Team Kaba, critics have questioned his decision to decline a recent public debate, his association with the outgoing GFF administration, and whether his military career can be balanced with leading Gambian football.
Jammeh and his supporters say those criticisms misrepresent both his record and his approach to leadership.
Allegation 1: “Ducking” the SJAG Presidential Debate
One of the most widely discussed criticisms followed Colonel Jammeh’s decision not to participate in the presidential debate organised by the Sports Journalists Association of The Gambia (SJAG). Critics quickly portrayed his absence as an attempt to avoid public scrutiny.
The Reality
Colonel Jammeh has maintained that his decision was based on procedural integrity rather than political convenience.
In a clarifying interview, he explained that the debate was organised without formal coordination or the active involvement of the GFF Electoral Committee, the independent body mandated to oversee the federation’s electoral process.
Rather than avoiding questions, Jammeh argues that participating would have undermined the authority of the very institution responsible for managing the election.
For a candidate who has pledged to strengthen governance, professionalism and respect for institutional processes, he says adherence to established procedures is non-negotiable.
Allegation 2: A “Status Quo” Candidate Blocking Reform
Because Jammeh received the endorsement of Team Kaba, the camp of outgoing GFF President Lamin Kaba Bajo, critics have portrayed him as a continuation of the current administration, suggesting his leadership would bring little meaningful change.
The Reality
While Jammeh acknowledges the progress made over the past decade, his supporters argue that his own record reflects an independent vision focused on strengthening governance and financial management.
Among the credentials they highlight are:
• Academic and Financial Expertise: Jammeh graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accountancy from the University of The Gambia. Supporters say his financial background positions him well to strengthen transparency, accountability and sound financial management within the federation.
• The Falcons FC Model: As the driving force behind Falcons FC, Jammeh helped build a club recognised for its discipline, organisational structure and commitment to player development.
Supporters argue that his vision is not simply to preserve past achievements but to build on them through stronger governance, greater professionalism and improved financial oversight.

Allegation 3: Military Commitment vs. Football Governance
Some critics have questioned whether a serving military officer has the time, temperament and flexibility to lead the country’s football federation, arguing that the two roles may conflict.
The Reality
Supporters reject that argument, pointing to Jammeh’s long-standing involvement in football alongside his military career.
A former player for The Gambia men’s national football team, he has remained actively involved in football administration while building a career in public service.
They argue that his military background brings several strengths to football leadership, including:
- Discipline and Accountability: Supporters believe the organisational discipline developed through military service can strengthen administration and improve accountability within the federation.
- Continental Experience: Jammeh’s role as a CAF Security Officer demonstrates experience working at the highest levels of African football administration.
- Proven Leadership: His experience managing complex operations in high-pressure environments is viewed by supporters as an asset in leading an organisation responsible for developing football nationwide.
The Verdict
As the August Elective Congress approaches, delegates and football stakeholders will ultimately decide which candidate they believe offers the strongest vision for Gambian football.
Jammeh and his supporters maintain that many of the criticisms directed at his candidacy overlook his academic background, football experience and administrative record.
They argue that, viewed in full, “Falcons” Jammeh is a disciplined, experienced and professionally qualified candidate seeking to build on the federation’s progress while modernising the governance of Gambian football.
