A man identified as A. Diédhiou has been arrested in Touba after allegedly posing as “Philippe Diatta”, a Christian seeking to convert to Islam, to gain the trust of a marabout’s inner circle and defraud his followers.
According to Seneweb, he stayed with the marabout’s entourage for several days after earning their trust, borrowed the phone of a talibé (aide), disappeared with it, and drained over 600,000 FCFA from a Wave account.
He is also accused of accessing the victim’s WhatsApp contacts to solicit more money in the marabout’s name before being tracked down by police and handed over to prosecutors in Diourbel, central Senegal, on charges including theft and fraud.
