Reports that former President Macky Sall could return to Dakar for talks with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye have caught attention across Senegal. For many supporters of the ruling PASTEF movement, the reported visit sits uneasily with the party’s years-long campaign against Sall’s administration and its promise to dismantle the system he represented.
According to several Senegalese media outlets, Sall is expected to arrive in Dakar on Friday and hold talks with Diomaye. His visit is also expected to include diplomatic and political engagements linked to his reported bid to become the next United Nations Secretary-General.
The prospect of the meeting is particularly symbolic given the bitter political rivalry that defined Sall’s presidency. Under his administration, Diomaye and Ousmane Sonko were jailed, PASTEF was dissolved, and the party repeatedly accused the state of political persecution and democratic backsliding.
The meeting also comes after Senegal’s Court of Auditors uncovered around US$7 billion in hidden debt accumulated under Sall’s administration, findings later accepted by the IMF that pushed the country’s debt burden sharply higher and complicated negotiations with the Fund.
