Former Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) National Assembly Member for Jimara Constituency, Alhagie H. Sowe, has officially joined the National People’s Party (NPP), declaring his support for President Adama Barrow and pledging to help secure the party’s victory in the 2026 presidential election.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Sowe said his decision followed “deep reflection and unwavering conviction” after resigning from the GDC.
“With deep reflection and unwavering conviction, I hereby announce my official decision to join the National People’s Party under the leadership of President Adama Barrow, effective immediately,” he said.
Sowe said several political parties approached him following his resignation but stressed that his political journey has always been driven by the development of Jimara District rather than personal interests.
“My entry into politics was never for personal gain, but for a higher calling: the development and upliftment of my people in Jimara District,” he said.
Explaining his decision, the former lawmaker said he believes the NPP’s development agenda aligns with the vision he pursued during his time in Parliament.
He cited the expansion of electricity, road construction and other infrastructure projects in Jimara as evidence of what he described as the government’s commitment to rural development.
“These are not promises; they are tangible realities seen by myself and every Gambian.
They are the fruits of a government committed to rural transformation and national progress,” Sowe said.
The former MP also pledged to campaign for President Barrow’s re-election, saying he would mobilise support across Jimara and beyond.
“I declare my full support for the NPP and pledge to work tirelessly to strengthen the party and ensure the re-election of President Barrow,” he said.
Sowe’s defection marks a notable political development in Jimara as parties intensify preparations for The Gambia’s 2026 presidential election.
