Breaking: Clearing Agents’ Strike Disrupts Port Operations as Group Alleges Government Collusion With Foreign Firm to Exploit Gambians

Written by: Alieu Jallow

Port operations at the Gambia Ports Authority have been disrupted after clearing agents launched a sit-down strike, halting container clearance at the country’s main seaport. The Gambia Association of Clearing and Forwarding Agencies says the action follows escalating tensions over what it describes as unjust charges imposed by a foreign company, amid allegations that government officials are colluding in the arrangement.

Members of the association allege that for the past three years the central government, through the Ministry of Finance, has permitted Gambia Marine Solutions Company, reportedly owned by a Freetown-based British national, to impose fees they consider excessive and unjustified. These claims remain unverified.

According to the group, the charges have placed a heavy financial burden on clearing agents and importers, with the cost ultimately passed on to ordinary Gambians through higher prices of goods. The association also maintains that the fees are driving importers to alternative ports in neighbouring countries.

Government authorities have not yet publicly responded to the allegations or the ongoing disruption at the ports. More details to follow as the situation develops.
