The death of Omar Badjie of Mandinary village in The Gambia’s West Coast Region has taken a major legal turn after a Coroner’s inquest recommended possible criminal proceedings against police officers involved.
The incident occurred on September 26, 2025, during a police operation in Mandinary. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic pursuit and alleged that Badjie was subjected to physical force during his apprehension. These claims became central to the inquest findings.
Principal Magistrate and Coroner Anna O. Mendy led the inquiry, examining twelve witnesses, reviewing the post-mortem report, and visiting the scene. The Coroner concluded that Badjie died from acute brain injury caused by physical exertion, stress, and assault inflicted by police officers during the pursuit.
Based on these findings, the Coroner recommended the case be referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for consideration of criminal charges.
Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow, reviewing the proceedings under Section 10 of the Coroners Act, expressed satisfaction with the legality and propriety of the findings. He has forwarded the full report to the Attorney General and the DPP for necessary action.
The Office of the Chief Justice commended the Coroner, witnesses, and all contributors to the inquiry, urging continued cooperation to ensure the recommendations are implemented as the case moves to the next stage.
