Bojang warns of ‘retaliation’ over alleged opposition harassment

By Dawda Baldeh

National Democratic Party (NDP) leader Kebba Madi Bojang has warned that continued alleged harassment and unequal treatment of opposition figures could provoke a response from his party, as he called on authorities to ensure a level playing field ahead of the presidential election.

Speaking at an NDP rally in Farafenni on Friday, Bojang accused authorities of intimidating opposition supporters and treating political parties unequally.

“If you continue pushing us to the wall, we will retaliate, and nobody can stop us,” he said.

The NDP leader also alleged that he and his supporters faced delays of nearly two hours at a ferry terminal during his nationwide tour, and urged authorities to guarantee opposition leaders equal access to ferry services.

“We are all Gambians, and we all deserve equal treatment, not injustice,” he said.

Bojang further questioned reported police instructions requiring his private security personnel to stop wearing uniforms said to resemble those used by state security agencies. He called on Interior Minister Abdoulie Sanyang to issue written guidelines clarifying the uniforms and colours reserved for security personnel.

Although he said he had directed his team to stop wearing the disputed uniforms, Mr Bojang expressed concern about his personal safety, claiming that his party had not been provided with security personnel despite notifying authorities about its nationwide tour.

“Minister of Interior Abdoulie Sanyang, my life lies in your hands until I return home safely. If anything happens to me, you are fully responsible,” he said.

The allegations have not been independently verified, and the Interior Ministry had not commented by the time of publication.
