Statement on Electoral Integrity and Abuse of Authority in Nyangen

By Kemo Bojang, Spokesperson, UNITE Movement for Change

We are deeply concerned by credible reports emerging from Nyangen Village in Niani District, where the Governor of CRR and the Seyfo have allegedly confiscated the official alkali stamp of the village. This action, reportedly taken because the alkali’s son is associated with the UNITE Movement for Change, represents a dangerous abuse of authority and a direct threat to the integrity of our democratic process.

The consequences of are going to harm hundreds of innocent Gambians who are now unable to access the attestations required to obtain their voter cards. In effect, they are being denied their constitutional right to participate in the electoral process. This is unacceptable.

Traditional leaders have no role in manipulating or obstructing electoral participation. Their responsibility is to serve their communities with fairness, neutrality, integrity and not to weaponize public institutions for political purposes. The alkali stamp is a public instrument meant to facilitate civic life, not to punish political association.

What we are witnessing is part of a broader and increasingly visible pattern. The NPP and elements within the government are beginning to recognize UNITE as a genuine political force, one that resonates with the people and threatens the status quo. Instead of engaging fairly in the democratic space, there are now worrying signs of intimidation, suppression, and victimization of those perceived to be aligned with our movement.

This is not just about Nyangen. It is about the future of our democracy.

We therefore call for:

  • The immediate return of the alkali stamp to the rightful village authority
  • Urgent restoration of access to voter documentation for all affected residents
  • A full, transparent, and independent investigation into this incident
  • Clear assurances that no Gambian will be denied their right to vote on the basis of political affiliation

Democracy cannot survive where fear, coercion, and abuse of power are allowed to take root. The right to vote is sacred. It must be protected at all costs. UNITE will continue to stand with the people, fearlessly, firmly, and without compromise.

The Gambia belongs to all of us.
