Political leaders and civil society figures have condemned the alleged manhandling of National Democratic Party (NDP) leader Kebba Madi Bojang during an operation by officers of the Gambia Immigration Department that also targeted German businessman Muhammed Rainey.
Videos circulating on social media show a confrontation between Bojang and immigration officers as they attempted to apprehend Rainey, who is reportedly facing deportation on national security grounds. The incident has since sparked widespread public debate and prompted calls for greater transparency from the authorities.
Among those reacting is PROGRESS Movement leader Amadou Jaiteh, who described Bojang’s treatment as “brutal and degrading,” arguing that such conduct has no place in a democratic society regardless of political affiliation.
Jaiteh said every Gambian deserves to be treated with dignity and respect when interacting with state security officers, stressing that law enforcement powers must never be used to humiliate or intimidate citizens.
“The uniform of the state is a responsibility, not a license for abuse,” he said, adding that security officers are expected to enforce the law professionally while respecting human rights.
He warned that any perception of political bias or excessive use of force by state institutions could erode public confidence, particularly as the country moves closer to the election period.
Jaiteh has called for an immediate, transparent, and independent investigation into the incident, urging the authorities to identify those involved and take appropriate disciplinary or legal action if any misconduct is established.
“This is not just about one individual. It is about the integrity of our security system and the protection of every citizen’s rights,” he added.
Jaiteh also renewed calls for broader security sector reforms, arguing that state security institutions should protect citizens, uphold the rule of law, and maintain public trust through accountability, professionalism, and respect for human dignity.
The Immigration Department has not publicly responded to the allegations surrounding the incident.
