Information Minister Announces Sign Language Interpretation for GRTS News, Plans Expansion

By Mama A. Touray

The Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, has briefed Parliament on the introduction of sign language interpretation on Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS) programmes.

Dr. Ceesay was responding to a question raised by Suwaibou Touray, the National Assembly Member for Wuli East, who sought clarification on why the national broadcaster does not adequately cater for people with hearing impairments through sign language interpretation during news broadcasts and other programmes.

Hon. Touray expressed concern that persons with disabilities, particularly those with hearing impairments, do not sufficiently benefit from public broadcasting, especially news and other announcements aired on GRTS.

In response, Dr. Ceesay explained that sign language interpretation was not part of GRTS news broadcasts or other programmes before his appointment as Minister.

He said he subsequently directed the national broadcaster to introduce the service, guided by his vision of ensuring that every Gambian, regardless of their circumstances or abilities, has access to public information.

“Based on my direction, the Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS), has engage the services of two sign language interpreters to provide interpretation during the evening and night news broadcast. This arrangement has been in effect since January 1st 2026,” he said.

Under the current arrangement, one interpreter provides sign language interpretation during the 8pm news bulletin, while the second covers the 10pm news bulletin daily.

Dr. Ceesay informed Parliament that the service is currently being implemented “as a pilot initiative with plans underway to expand the service to other programmes in due course”.

He further disclosed that the Mansa Kunda ministerial town hall programme also provides sign language interpretation.

The Minister emphasised the importance of the initiative, stating that it “promotes greater accessibility, inclusivity, and equal participation in public broadcasting. The Ministry recognizes the importance of ensuring that public information is accessible to all segments of society”.

He assured lawmakers that the Ministry would continue supporting efforts to strengthen inclusive communication and broadcasting services.
