The Gambia has climbed three places in the latest Rule of Law Index published by the World Justice Project (WJP), an independent international organisation that measures the rule of law worldwide.
The country ranks 86th out of 143 countries in 2026, compared with 89th last year.
However, The Gambia remains below its 2020 position, when it first entered the index at 74th out of 128 countries, three years after President Adama Barrow took office following Yahya Jammeh’s 22-year rule.
The index assesses corruption, government accountability, fundamental rights, security and the justice system.
Despite this year’s improved ranking, The Gambia’s overall score remains around 0.49 out of 1, indicating limited progress in strengthening the rule of law.
