A recent publication has come under scrutiny following concerns that it may present an incomplete or potentially misleading account of events surrounding the Gambia Football Federation (GFF) presidential race.
The report claimed that incumbent GFF president Lamin Kaba Bajo initially backed Kemo Ceesay, the former Finance Director of the GFF, for the top position, before shifting support to Musa Jammeh, an aspiring candidate for GFF president, after Ceesay allegedly declined. However, available evidence points to a different sequence of events.
In an April 16th, 2026 interview published by The Standard Newspaper under the headline “Kemo Ceesay confident of becoming Team Kaba candidate,” Ceesay expressed optimism about securing Kaba Bajo’s endorsement. “I am confident of becoming Team Kaba’s candidate,” he stated, a position that appears inconsistent with claims that he turned down any offer of support.
Observers say this contrast raises questions about the accuracy of the earlier report. One football stakeholder familiar with the process noted that there is no clear record indicating Ceesay declined backing, suggesting the claim may not be supported by verifiable facts.
Some analysts also view the situation as a reflection of how narratives can shape public perception during high-stakes elections. Commentator Demba Jawo said, “This is not journalism; it’s a strategic communication effort dressed up as reporting. When facts are selectively presented or distorted, it erodes trust.”
Attention, meanwhile, continues to shift toward Musa Jammeh, whose campaign has focused on structured development plans for Gambian football. “Our focus is on tangible progress, youth development, infrastructure, and long-term sustainability,” Jammeh said in a recent address.
As the GFF elections approach, the situation highlights the importance of careful fact-checking and balanced reporting. For many stakeholders, the focus remains on ensuring voters rely on accurate and verified information when considering the future direction of Gambian football.
