Early Fertilizer Delivery Boosts Farmer Confidence Ahead of Promising Rainy Season

As the 2026 rainy season gets underway across The Gambia, farmers are heading into the cultivation season with renewed confidence following the early distribution and affordable pricing of fertilizer, developments they believe could significantly boost agricultural production and strengthen national food security.

The Gambia Farmers Union (GFU), speaking on behalf of farmers nationwide, has commended the Managing Director and staff of the National Food Security, Processing and Marketing Corporation (GGC) for what it described as a significant improvement in fertilizer distribution and accessibility.

For many farming communities, receiving fertilizer before the peak of the rains has marked a welcome departure from previous years, when delayed deliveries often disrupted planting schedules and negatively affected yields.

This year, however, farmers say fertilizer reached them well in advance, allowing them to prepare their fields and begin cultivation at the appropriate time.

“Farmers are entering this rainy season with confidence and high expectations,” the Union said. “The timely distribution of fertilizer has enabled farmers to plan better and maximize the opportunities presented by the rains.”

The affordability of fertilizer has provided further encouragement. Before the Government announced the official price, many farmers feared a bag would cost more than D1,100, raising concerns that high input costs would limit the amount of land they could cultivate.

Those concerns eased after the Government set the price lower than many had anticipated, making the essential input more accessible to thousands of farming households across the country.

Farmers have widely welcomed the price reduction, describing it as practical support that will ease financial pressure while enabling them to increase production during the planting season.

The GFU said the improvements under the current leadership of the GGC have strengthened confidence in the country’s agricultural sector and encouraged greater participation in farming. The Union added that improved distribution systems and easier access to fertilizer have enhanced farmer preparedness and reinforced national efforts to achieve food security.

According to the Union, the overwhelming majority of farmers appreciate the commitment demonstrated by the Corporation’s management and staff, noting that the positive changes have come at a critical time as expectations grow for a productive rainy season.

With planting now underway, farmers are optimistic that the combination of timely fertilizer supplies, affordable farm inputs, and favourable weather conditions will translate into improved harvests, higher incomes, and stronger food security.

The Gambia Farmers Union expressed gratitude to the National Food Security, Processing and Marketing Corporation and reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with stakeholders to advance agriculture and improve the livelihoods of farmers across the country.
