African West Airlines has announced plans to introduce a direct, non-stop air service between Banjul and the Canary Islands in Spain, positioning the route as a faster and more efficient link between The Gambia and Europe. The service is expected to operate weekly, with a flight time of around three hours, giving passengers more direct access to Spain and onward connections to major European and transatlantic destinations.

Details shared with The Fatu Network present the initiative as a commercial gateway aimed at supporting trade, tourism, and broader economic activity, with the Canary Islands serving as a strategic transit hub. The route would strengthen The Gambia’s international air connectivity and reduce reliance on the multi-leg journeys currently required to reach parts of Europe.
