A rising Gambian entrepreneur, Buba Sonko, popularly known as Max Sonko, is sending a clear message to young people across the country, urging them to stay away from crime and build a future through skills and business.
Hailing from Jinack Island, a marginalised community in the North Bank Region, Sonko is steadily making a name for himself as a fashion designer and youth inspiration.
“When I see young people engaging in theft, drugs, or any illegal activities, it really hurts me,” he said. “No one should sell drugs or steal. If you don’t have an office job, learn a skill or start a business. There’s real money in these areas.”
In the busy streets of Serekunda, Sonko is widely recognised for his dedication and work ethic, qualities that have earned him admiration from many.
“People often tell me I inspire them, and that means everything to me. I want more young people to rise and do the same,” he added.
Driven by a vision bigger than himself, Sonko says his goal is to create jobs and empower others, stressing that the government alone cannot solve unemployment.
“You don’t have to wait for your dream job. Start something, anything, that earns you money legally,” he said. “If you want independence, focus on business or skills.”
His journey has not been without challenges.
Despite meeting university requirements and memorising the Quran, financial constraints forced him to take a different path.
“After high school, I had the chance to go to university, but my family couldn’t afford it. That’s how I got into business, and I don’t regret it,” he shared. “Today, I support myself, help my family, and even provide jobs for others who work with me.”
Sonko also credits his growing success to support from well-known Gambian artists and a strong online customer base, both of which continue to motivate him.
From humble beginnings to becoming a source of inspiration, Max Sonko’s story is a reminder that success is built through effort, not circumstance.
