The Gambia Action Party (GAP) has expressed condolences following the death of Mali’s Defence Minister, Sadio Camara, along with several soldiers and civilians, in a deadly attack.
Camara was killed after armed groups carried out coordinated assaults across the country, including a car bomb attack on his residence in Kati, near the capital Bamako, as part of one of the largest waves of violence in recent years.
In a statement issued by its leadership, the party conveyed solidarity with Mali’s transitional president, Assimi Goïta, and the Malian people during what it described as a period of grief.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the President of Mali and the resilient people of Mali,” the statement read, as the party acknowledged the country’s ongoing security challenges.
GAP condemned the attack and described it as part of what it believes to be a broader pattern of destabilisation involving external actors.
“This heinous act is yet another manifestation of the destructive agenda of western imperialist interests, seeking to undermine the sovereignty and stability of African nations,” the party stated.
The party also reiterated its position on regional unity and independence, calling for solidarity among Malians in the aftermath of the incident.
The statement concluded with prayers for the victims, saying, “May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace, and may the people of Mali find strength and resilience in unity during this difficult time.”
