Gambia Cooks Up First-Ever Benachin Festival to Celebrate National Identity

One of The Gambia’s most revered traditional dishes is set to take center stage this month as the country hosts its first-ever Benachin Festival, a landmark culinary event designed to showcase local gastronomy and youthful talent.

The historic celebration, scheduled for July 24, 2026, will take place at the iconic Arch 22 monument in the capital city of Banjul. Orchestrated by Jarra’s Restaurant and Catering Services, the festival is dedicated entirely to Benachin—the beloved, richly seasoned one-pot rice dish that stands as a cornerstone of Gambian identity and is celebrated across West Africa as the origin of Jollof rice.

The upcoming festival aims to bridge the gap between cultural heritage and future economic opportunities by offering a massive platform for aspiring local cooks and students. Competitors will represent all three political constituencies of the capital—Banjul South, Banjul North, and Banjul Central—alongside representatives from seven major culinary skills centers spread across the country.
Chef Ya Mai Sey, the trailblazing founder of Jarra’s Restaurant and Catering Services, believes the event will fundamentally alter how the country values its domestic food sector.

“This is more than a food festival; it is a celebration of our identity, our culture and the flavours that bring Gambians together,” Sey said. “The Benachin Festival marks a historic milestone in promoting our culinary heritage and creating opportunities for young chefs to showcase their skills.”

Beyond the fierce kitchen competitions, attendees will experience a vibrant cultural ecosystem featuring live cooking demonstrations, traditional performances, musical entertainment, and a vast marketplace showcasing authentic regional variations of the iconic dish.

Organizers are positioning the inaugural gathering as a major driver for domestic and international tourism, using local food to build stronger community connections. Sey is urging the wider public, international tourists, corporate institutions, and passionate food enthusiasts to converge on the capital to witness the spectacle firsthand.
