How Chef Sanka Bojang Turned Spice Hub into a National Success Story

What began as a dream inspired by experiences beyond The Gambia has grown into a well-known culinary brand. For Chef Sanka Bojang, CEO of Spice Hub, the journey has been shaped by resilience, sacrifice and a commitment to promoting authentic Gambian cuisine while creating opportunities for young people.

“The man behind Spice Hub is myself,” Bojang said, explaining that his vision was inspired by the abundance of local ingredients available in The Gambia.

“I wanted to create something that celebrates our local produce while showcasing creativity and innovation through food.”

Bojang said the business faced significant setbacks, including heavy financial losses caused by prolonged electricity outages that destroyed large quantities of seafood. Despite the challenges, he said he remained committed to keeping the business running by personally sourcing ingredients, preparing meals and maintaining service for customers.

“The secret behind Spice Hub’s success has been our commitment to authenticity,” he said.

“We take our food back to the way our grandmothers prepared meals, using natural ingredients and authentic Gambian flavours.”

Beyond running the restaurant, Bojang said he has focused on empowering young women through free culinary training and mentorship. According to him, Spice Hub has trained 114 underprivileged young women, many of whom have gone on to secure employment or establish their own businesses.

He also believes food plays an important role in promoting tourism and preserving culture.

“We want people to experience real Gambian cuisine and celebrate our ethnic dishes,” he said.

Bojang was recognised with a national Heroes Award, which he described as the greatest honour he has received in his home country. He dedicated the award to underprivileged young women across The Gambia.

Looking ahead, Bojang said he plans to expand Spice Hub across The Gambia and beyond while continuing to mentor aspiring chefs.

“My message to every woman is simple,” Bojang said.

“Believe in yourself. Trust the process. If you want others to believe in you, you must first believe in yourself.”
