“The Roads We Construct Today Must Anticipate the Demands of Tomorrow” – Barrow

President Adama Barrow on Tuesday inaugurated the new 4.5-kilometre Sanyang Beach Side Road in Kombo South, saying the project will improve access to the coast and support fishing, farming, tourism, trade and other businesses in the area.

The concrete road, which has been under construction since December 2023, runs from the Sanyang Coastal Highway to the beach and fish landing area, with another section connecting the Beach Road to Kenyni Grand Mosque. It was constructed by Gambian-owned Zen Construction under the government’s EPC Nationwide Road Development Programme.

Speaking at the inauguration, Barrow linked the road to wider plans to develop The Gambia’s coastal economy, particularly the planned Deep-Sea Port in Sanyang.

“The roads we construct today must anticipate the demands of tomorrow and provide the connectivity required to support the increasing volume of trade, investment, tourism, and economic activity,” he said.

Barrow said the project would benefit farmers, fishermen, traders and entrepreneurs while creating more opportunities for young people and women.

“In this sense, the road is not simply a route to the beach but also part of the infrastructure that will connect communities to the wider opportunities emerging along our coast,” he said.

The President urged residents and road users to protect the new infrastructure, saying its real value would ultimately depend on “the businesses it supports, the investments it generates, the visitors it attracts” and the opportunities created for local people.
