Ousmane Sonko has been elected President of Senegal’s National Assembly with 132 votes out of 165 seats during a special parliamentary session held today in Dakar, just days after President Bassirou Diomaye Faye dismissed him as Prime Minister and dissolved the government.
The result means Sonko secured roughly 80% support inside the Assembly, reinforcing the strength of his political bloc despite his removal from government.
During the session, Sonko received standing ovations and applause as he cast his ballot before later being elected Assembly president, a position considered one of Senegal’s most powerful constitutional offices.
