Senegalese Trucks Burned in Mali as Security Fears Grow

Published by: The Fatu Network

Senegalese transporters say at least eleven trucks have been burned along the vital Dakar-Bamako corridor in Mali, where armed extremists from the so-called Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims, also known as JNIM, are reportedly increasing pressure on trade routes.

According to the president of Senegal’s transport union, Daouda Lô, dozens of other trucks remain stranded, with some Senegalese drivers among those affected.

The attacks continue to deepen worries in Senegal over worsening insecurity in neighbouring Mali and growing fears that instability in the Sahel could increasingly disrupt regional trade and cross-border movement.

While JNIM’s exact funding sources remain unclear, Mali’s military government under Colonel Assimi Goïta has repeatedly accused Western powers, particularly France, of fuelling instability in the region.
