A senior figure in the UNITE Movement, Ebrima Dibba, has criticised President Adama Barrow, accusing him of double standards and deliberately sowing division within the opposition.
Dibba branded the president a “double standards leader” who “cannot be trusted,” claiming Barrow’s remarks about young people were inconsistent.
“Four or five months ago, President Barrow told Gambians that young people like us challenging Ousainou Darboe were disrespectful… But now he is criticizing Darboe and saying we were exercising our rights. Where did he get that from?” Dibba asked.
He accused Barrow of hypocrisy for failing to defend UNITE members when they faced insults, only later shifting his stance to appear supportive. “Why didn’t he condemn the insults against us back then? Now he criticizes Darboe so we think he supports us. That’s double standards,” he said.
Dibba also issued a political warning, urging Barrow to step aside after his second term. “He is becoming unpopular among the electorate. Gambians will vote him out in December 2026,” he declared.
Dismissing doubts about UNITE’s strength, Dibba insisted the movement’s youthful leadership is capable and resilient. “You said we cannot sustain our party. We want to make it clear, we are young and capable. UNITE is led by competent young people. Stay away from our issues with the UDP,” he added.
The remarks highlight rising tensions ahead of the 2026 elections, as divisions within and between opposition groups continue to shape The Gambia’s political landscape.
