The Gambia Action Party (GAP) has called on President Adama Barrow’s government to immediately release Ousainou Bojang and his sister Amie, describing their continued detention as a threat to justice and democratic governance.
In a statement, party leader and Secretary General Musa Ousainou Yali Batchilly said: “The continued detention of Ousainou Bojang and Amie Bojang undermines the principles of justice and the rule of law. We call on the government to release them without delay.”
GAP stressed that respect for the judiciary must remain paramount, warning against actions that could weaken public confidence in the legal system.
“The courts must be respected unconditionally, as they remain the ultimate guardians of fairness and due process,” the party said. “Any attempt to disregard judicial authority erodes public trust in governance and threatens democratic values.”
The party added that releasing the siblings would reinforce the country’s commitment to constitutional order. “Their immediate release is not only a matter of justice but also a reaffirmation of the nation’s commitment to uphold constitutional rights and the sanctity of the courts,” the statement said.
Ousainou and his sister were acquitted by the high court in Banjul on Monday and were immediately rearrested on their release day on Tuesday by the police right in front of the Mile II prisons.
The case has drawn widespread public attention in recent weeks, with political actors and civil society groups raising concerns about due process and judicial independence. Observers note that such cases often serve as tests of democratic institutions, particularly in safeguarding the separation of powers and protecting individual rights.
